Scottsdale Parents: Think Twice Before Buying A Used Car Seat

Scottsdale Parents: Think Twice Before Buying A Used Car Seat

In these days of rising prices and shrinking paychecks, Scottsdale parents are trying to save money wherever they can. They shop sales for food, clothes, school supplies, and other necessities.

Many Scottsdale thrift stores have seen their business increase in the past few years as parents have discovered how much money they can save by buying used items. Perfectly good toys, clothes, books, sports gear, and children’s furniture can be purchased for a fraction of retail price at Scottsdale thrift stores.

One place Scottsdale parents should not scrimp, however, is on their child’s car seat. If you are considering buying a used child safety seat, make sure it comes with the user’s manual, the model number, and date of manufacture. You want to be certain that you know the complete history of the car seat. Check to see if it is on the list of recalled products. (Information at http://www.carseat.org/Recalls/recall.shtml.) If it has ever been involved in anything more severe than a low-speed fender bender, don’t buy it.

For more information about children’s safety in Scottsdale, or my favorite nutritional product, contact me today at 480-209-3737.

Probiotics For The Prevention Of Eczema In Cave Creek

Probiotics For The Prevention Of Eczema In Cave Creek

If your Cave Creek kiddos scratch and claw at their skin because they suffer from children’s eczema you might consider including more probiotics in their diet.

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that promote the growth of friendly microflora in the intestines. Some probiotic powerhouses you can find in your favorite Cave Creek grocery store are yogurt, kefir, and kimchi.

Probiotics support digestive health in a number of ways. They have been shown to prevent diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and help reduce the symptoms of eczema.

Safe and natural probiotics can be an effective weapon in your eczema arsenal. Cave Creek dermatologists and Scottsdale pediatricians also recommend washing your tot’s clothing with mild detergents, using humidifiers, and bathing them with mild soap and then letting their skin completely dry.

My name is Mike Pedersen and I am a proud XoBiotic Squares representative. I also campaign for children’s health in Cave Creek, Scottsdale, and the surrounding areas. If you would like more information about children’s health topics or my Power Squares business, contact me today!

Dehydration Can Trigger Tantrums In Cave Creek

Dehydration Can Trigger Tantrums In Cave Creek

Most Cave Creek parents have experienced a tantrum or meltdown with their children. My kids usually lose it when they are hungry or need a nap. Some kids flip out if their routine is altered. My Scottsdale co-worker claims her kids get crazy when there is a full moon.

Lack of sleep and low blood sugar are the usual suspects causing irritability in my Scottsdale child, but a new study in the Journal of Nutrition points the finger at another culprit.1 Dehydration seems to lead to a low mood in healthy women. The study only included young women, but I did a little experiment on my own kids and noticed when they were mildly dehydrated they were fatigued and irritable.

Cave Creek kids need nutritious food and plenty of water to help maintain good physical and mental health.

Scottsdale Injuries: Get The Ice, Fast!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Scottsdale Injuries Get The Ice Fast!

If your Scottsdale kids are active on the field, the court, or in your own backyard, chances are you have dealt with many bumps, bruises, and sprains. Prompt medical care can make all the difference when it comes to how quickly an injury heals.

Despite medical advancements, when it comes to a sprain, strain, break, or bruise, the best way to reduce pain and swelling is the same as when you were a kid: apply ice.

For the best DIY ice bag, fill a zip-top bag with ice cubes or crushed ice and a little water. The liquid will help the bag conform to the body and distribute the cold evenly. You can also use the frozen peas trick, which does essentially the same thing.

Don’t apply the bag to bare skin, however. This could cause frostbite or even a burn. Wrap the pack in a thin towel or article of clothing.

Don’t take the ice off too soon. Removing it after just a few minutes, when the skin is cold to the touch, won’t have a lasting effect. Leave ice on the injury until the area goes numb, but not more than 20 minutes. Repeat this once an hour for up to four hours.

Remember to get the ice on as soon as possible. Preventing and reducing inflammation speeds up the healing process. The sooner you get ice on it, the sooner your Scottsdale child will be back in action.

Flu Shot Guidelines For Scottsdale Kids

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Flu Shot Guidelines For Scottsdale Kids

Every year as winter approaches, many Scottsdale parents wonder if they should get their kids a flu shot.

Everyone gets the flu, right? Is it that big of a deal?

In most cases, the flu is an inconvenience, but not detrimental beyond missing a few days of school. However, Scottsdale pediatricians caution that it is extremely important for high risk kids to get a flu shot. Ditto if your child is in regular contact with a high risk person.

What qualifies a child as high risk? Scottsdale experts say that chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma puts a child at greater risk because the flu can contribute to serious complications. Many Scottsdale doctors also recommend flu shots for all children under five years old. Scottsdale experts advise getting your child’s flu vaccination as early as possible, in August or September or as soon as it is available, to protect them through the entire season which generally lasts from October to April.

Remember that two shots are required for children under the age of eight, given four weeks apart, for full protection your first year of getting vaccinated. Just one shot per year is needed after that.

Flumist is a nasal spray vaccine that can be given to healthy children ages two and up, an option that can be more child friendly. Side effects from either method of vaccination may include runny nose, muscle aches, vomiting, or low grade fever. The new flu vaccines offer protection from both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Does Your Arizona Family Have An Emergency Kit?

Does Your Arizona Family Have An Emergency Kit?

Smart residents prepare for emergencies, and parents of young children in the Scottsdale area should be aware of the special nature of preparing their families for emergencies.

Since the health and safety of all family members is important, everyone’s needs should be taken into account when preparing emergency provisions.

A 72-hour emergency kit should be easy to grab and contain essentials like water, food, first aid kit, flashlight, prescription medications, etc. Cave Creek families should consider what each child eats. Formula and bottles should be included if you have infants, and soft baby food (and a spoon!) for toddlers. Don’t forget diapers and baby wipes: you can find convenient travel sizes of these at Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Carefree area drugstores.

Since healthy kids grow and change so quickly, Cave Creek families should update these emergency kits at least twice a year.
A good reminder is daylight savings time. When Scottsdale families change their clocks, they should change the food and supplies in their kits.

I’m Mike Pedersen and the health and safety of Cave Creek kids is important to me. I am the owner of a home business that sells Power Squares. If you would like to learn more, please call me at 480-209-3737 or visit me on the web at http://www.healthychocolatebiz.net.

Fun Exercise Ideas For Carefree Kids

Fun Exercise Ideas For Carefree Kids

When I was growing up in Carefree, my friends and I never ran out of things to do, and most of our activities provided at least a little bit of exercise. I have fond memories of playing kick-the-can on warm summer nights and swimming at the old Carefree community pool.

Unfortunately, many of today’s Carefree kids spend hours daily in sedentary activities. Exercise benefits our physical, mental, and emotional health. Perhaps you might enjoy participating in some of these with your son or daughter.

Fun exercise suggestions:

  • Fly a kite (It’s even more fun if you sing the song from Mary Poppins while you are doing it.)
  • Wheels: bike, skateboard, longboard, inline skates, rip stick, scooter (don’t forget a helmet!)
  • Rake the yard
  • Hula hoop (The Carefree Wal-Mart carried them last time I checked.)
  • Martial arts
  • Juggling
  • Hacky sack
  • Badminton
  • Weight lifting
  • Hopscotch
  • Jump-roping
  • Tug-of-war

I am concerned about the state of children’s health in Arizona and like to share information about health issues in my blog. If you are looking for a low-fat, high antioxidant chocolate product that tastes like a diet-buster, call me today. I sell XoBiotic Squares and Power Squares, two tasty treats that help my kids stay healthy.

Plastic Alert For Carefree Parents

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Plastic Alert For Carefree Parents Hello new Carefree parents. Today’s Healthy Carefree Children’s blog focuses on BPA. Bisphenol A (BPA), the dangerous compound used in plastics manufacturing can now be detected everywhere in our environment: in our food, clothing, homes, offices, soil, water: you name it.

‘Since at least 1936 it has been known that BPA mimics estrogens, binding to the same receptors throughout the human body as natural female hormones.’1

What does this mean for Carefree kids? Numerous scientific studies suggest an increased risk of cancer and neurological problems.

Carefree infants are the most susceptible to even minute amounts of BPAs. Unfortunately, most infant formula containers and plastic bottles contain BPAs and other toxins.

What can Carefree parents do to reduce the risk of these chemicals finding their way into their child’s formula or baby food?

1) Do not heat plastic containers in the microwave.
2) Do not wash plastic containers in hot water.
3) Consider using glass bottles and containers.

These are simple steps that any Carefree parent or day-care provider can take. Toss your plastic bottles today! For more information about children’s health issues, call me at 480-209-3737.

Artificial Sweeteners And Your Scottsdale Child

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Artificial Sweeteners And Your Scottsdale Child When Scottsdale parents try to limit sugar in their children’s diets, they often turn to sugar substitutes. There are dozens of sweetening options available.

NutraSweet, Splenda, Equal, Sweet’N Low, Xylitol, Sorbitol, highly refined Stevia (Truvia, Pure Via) possible benefits:
May help kid’s consume fewer calories
Doesn’t contribute to tooth decay
Generally safe for Scottsdale children with diabetes (check with your doctor)

Don’t overdo it. Some Scottsdale children experience diarrhea and other intestinal problems if they consume artificial sweeteners. If your Scottsdale child is trying it for the first time, go easy until you know how they react to it.

Many people believe artificial sweeteners cause cancer, contribute to weight gain, and cause health problems. Talk to your Scottsdale pediatrician for children’s nutritional guidance.

To improve your child’s nutrition, ask me about Power Squares today by calling 480-209-3737. It’s a hit with children all over Arizona and I am sure your kids will love it also!

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Scottsdale

Prevent Classroom Sickness In Scottsdale

To curb the spread of viruses, lice, and other kid’s health threats in Scottsdale schools, parents need to teach their kids proper hygiene practices and review them on a regular basis.

Here is a rundown of some unwelcome classroom visitors and steps to combat them:

  • Head lice: wash hands frequently, don’t share combs, hats, scarves.
  • Ringworm (skin infection with circular lesions, not actually caused by worms): keep sores covered, don’t share combs or clothing.
  • Pinkeye: vigilant hand washing can help stop the spread. Scottsdale parents should keep kids home if their eyes are pink or draining fluid.
  • Colds, flu, strep: anti-bacterial wipes and no-rinse hand sanitizer can supplement soap and water scrubbing. Remind kids not to share drinks, snacks, lotion, chap stick, and lip gloss.

Scottsdale children who know and practice these safeguards will be prepared when the next H1N1 threat visits Scottsdale.

I promote children’s health issues in Scottsdale. For information on my health business, contact me today.
